Shinyanga— The Commissioner for Domestic Taxes at the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Alfred Mrengi (pictured) has emphasized the authority’s commitment to ensuring fairness in tax compliance for businesses of all sizes.
Speaking at a meeting with local business leaders in Shinyanga, yesterday September 25, 2024, Mrengi highlighted TRA’s goal to align tax payments with each business's actual capacity and scale.
"We will continue to enforce equity in tax collection—large businesses must pay higher taxes in line with their operations, while small businesses will pay proportionately smaller amounts," Mrengi stated, reinforcing that a fair tax system is paramount to fostering growth across Tanzania’s business landscape.
Mrengi also condemned the practice of larger businesses paying disproportionately lower taxes than smaller enterprises, urging all business owners to pay their dues promptly and in full. He reiterated TRA’s role as a supportive partner, working hand-in-hand with the business community to resolve operational challenges.
"Our decisions will be guided by professionalism, without deviating from government regulations. No TRA officer is above the law, and we have to provide services with integrity, adhering to the set procedures," Mrengi added.
Meanwhile, Shinyanga Regional TRA Manager, Josephat Mwaipaja, reminded business owners of the dedicated Thursday sessions, where the authority listens to their concerns and seeks joint solutions. He also encouraged TRA officials to regularly visit businesses to enhance service delivery and foster better relationships.
Vice Chairperson of the Shinyanga Region Chamber of Commerce, Hatibu Mgeja, echoed the need for strong collaboration between TRA and the business community, highlighting the importance of mutual support for economic growth in the region.
The meeting raised awareness among business owners about the importance of timely and accurate tax payments, with several attendees raising pertinent questions and offering feedback on how best to streamline the tax payment process for the continued prosperity of Shinyanga's business environment.
