Tanzania's healthcare investment shines as renowned cardiac surgeons operate in Zambia

By The Respondent reporter
In a remarkable display of Tanzania's advancing healthcare sector, four top surgeons from the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) are currently in Zambia performing heart surgeries.
This initiative stems from the substantial investments made by President Samia Suluhu Hassan in the health sector, which have elevated Tanzania's medical standing in the region.
The team, led by Dr. Viviane Mlawi, a pediatric cardiologist, is collaborating with their counterparts at the National Heart Hospital of Zambia for a week-long surgical mission. Accompanying the surgeons are specialists in anesthesia and operating room management, as well as two ICU nurses, all dedicated to enhancing patient care.
Dr. Mlawi outlined five primary objectives for this mission: performing heart surgeries for the numerous patients in Zambia, training Zambian doctors in advanced surgical techniques, and fostering skills exchange between the two nations.
The team also aims to assess equipment needs and identify potential areas for collaboration in specialized medical treatments.
Furthermore, Dr. Maiyer Msengi, a management specialist for international patients, emphasized the importance of streamlining entry processes, including visa issuance and accommodation for patients visiting from either country.
He assured that Tanzania would ensure timely appointments with specialist doctors to minimize living costs during treatment.
The initiative not only aims to provide top-notch care before and after heart surgeries but also positions JKCI as a premier destination for patients across Africa and beyond.
There is a strong focus on maintaining transparency in pricing and safeguarding patient rights throughout the treatment process.
Dr. Chabwela Shumba, spokesperson for the National Heart Hospital of Zambia, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Tanzanian doctors, noting that the investment in modern technology, such as MRI and CT scans at JKCI, rivals that of developed nations.
"There's no need to send our patients abroad; they can receive the same high-quality care right here at JKCI," Shumba stated.
This partnership underscores a growing commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery in both Tanzania and Zambia, paving the way for improved health outcomes and accessibility for patients in the region.
