Telecommunications company Yas Tanzania has graduated more than 20 senior managers from a leadership development programme aimed at preparing employees for top management positions and ensuring continuity when key roles become vacant.
The programme, developed in partnership with Strathmore Business School, focuses on team leadership, performance management and strategy execution, with participants also being prepared for potential executive and board-level responsibilities.
The initiative highlights the importance of developing internal talent as companies seek to strengthen management capacity, address skills gaps and create clearer career progression opportunities for employees.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony in Dar es Salaam, Yas Tanzania Chief Executive Officer Pierre Canton Bacara said preparing employees for greater responsibilities was critical to business performance and effective decision-making.
“As our business changes, our leaders must be ready to make difficult decisions, guide their teams and deliver results. Preparing people before they step into bigger roles gives them a stronger foundation and helps the business maintain continuity,” he said.
The programme seeks to establish a pool of qualified internal candidates for senior positions, reducing reliance on external recruitment whenever leadership vacancies arise.
For Tanzania's telecommunications industry, where businesses must respond to changing customer expectations and growing demand for digital services, stronger management capabilities can also support operational efficiency and the delivery of services to individuals, businesses and public institutions.
Yas Tanzania Head of Training and Development Janet Igogo said the programme was part of a broader employee development strategy covering department heads and other senior leaders.
“When a critical role becomes available, we want capable people within Yas who are ready to take it on. That requires deliberate preparation throughout their careers, with training that addresses the responsibilities they will face,” she said.
The approach places emphasis on preparing employees before they assume senior positions, rather than waiting for vacancies to emerge before identifying potential successors.
For the company, the programme is intended to strengthen its internal talent pool while giving employees opportunities to develop the skills required for career advancement.
Yas Tanzania plans to continue the initiative alongside other employee development programmes, with the aim of preparing more staff for management and leadership responsibilities.
The company said the effort forms part of its broader strategy to build leadership capacity and support business continuity as its operations and the telecommunications market evolve.
