The Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam is seeking to improve learning conditions for primary school pupils through a fundraising sports tournament aimed at supporting the provision of 600 school desks across the city.

The club raised funds through its Serve & Smash 2026 Pickleball and Padel Tournament, held on Wednesday, October 14, at Tanzanite Park in Mikocheni. The event brought together 147 participants across 73 teams, alongside Rotarians, corporate sponsors, families and other supporters.

Proceeds from the tournament will contribute to the provision of the desks through a Rotary Global Grant, supporting primary schools in communities across Dar es Salaam.

The initiative comes as the club continues its Gift of Education Desks Project, which seeks to improve classroom environments by ensuring pupils have proper desks and more comfortable spaces in which to learn.

Speaking during the tournament, Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam president Leenah Munyua said the event demonstrated how sport could bring people together to address community needs.

“Serve & Smash is about much more than sport. It is about bringing people together for a meaningful purpose. Every contribution made through this tournament brings us closer to providing schoolchildren with something essential, a proper desk and a dignified place to learn,” she said.

Ms Munyua said the strong participation and support from individuals and corporate partners reflected the potential of collective action in addressing challenges facing local communities.

She thanked sponsors, participants, volunteers and the organising committee for contributing their time and resources to the initiative, saying their support would help improve the learning environment for children in Dar es Salaam.

Beyond fundraising, the tournament provided an opportunity for businesses, professionals and community members to interact while supporting an education-focused cause.

The latest initiative builds on the club's Gift of Education Desks Project, which has provided more than 6,000 school desks valued at approximately TZS 600 million since its launch in 2020.

The project has benefited an estimated 15,000 pupils in schools across Dar es Salaam, according to the club.

The planned provision of another 600 desks is expected to extend the initiative's reach, reinforcing efforts to create more suitable learning environments for primary schoolchildren.

For pupils, access to proper desks can help make classrooms more comfortable and organised, while supporting a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.

The Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam is part of Rotary International, a global network whose members work with partners and communities on education, health and other development initiatives.

Through projects such as the school desk programme, the club continues to mobilise private-sector and community support to address local needs and improve access to better learning conditions.
