Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi’s visit to a football history museum in Madrid has highlighted the potential of sports tourism and modern infrastructure in expanding opportunities for young people in the Isles.

Dr Mwinyi, who is also Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, visited LEGENDS: The Home of Football on October 11, 2026, during his ongoing trip to Spain, where he explored collections documenting the history of world football.

Accompanied by Tanzania’s Ambassador to France, who is also accredited to Spain, Mr Saidi Yakubu, Dr Mwinyi viewed memorabilia from football legends, including jerseys and equipment associated with some of the sport’s most celebrated figures.

The visit comes as Zanzibar seeks to advance its sports sector through investment in modern facilities and initiatives aimed at enabling young people to participate in organised sports and develop their talents.

For Zanzibar, strengthening sports infrastructure could create opportunities beyond competition, including youth development, employment and tourism, particularly if facilities are developed to attract sporting events and visitors.

The experience of established football destinations such as Madrid also offers an opportunity to explore how sports heritage can be used to attract visitors and broaden tourism products.

However, translating such opportunities into tangible benefits will depend on sustained investment in facilities, grassroots sports programmes and systems that help talented young people progress to professional levels.

Zanzibar’s efforts to develop its sports sector could therefore complement its tourism ambitions while creating additional pathways for young people to participate in the economy.

The visit to LEGENDS: The Home of Football provided Dr Mwinyi with an opportunity to view collections celebrating the global game as Zanzibar continues to pursue the development of sports infrastructure and youth talent.
