Traditional dance groups across Tanzania have been urged to register with the National Arts Council (Basata) to secure official recognition and obtain permits needed to participate in public performances and other arts events.
The call was made by the Ministry of Information, Arts, Culture and Sports representative, Daniel Chilonzi, during celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of Tulia Trust, held alongside a traditional dance festival in Gombe Street, Itezi Ward, Mbeya City.
Mr Chilonzi said the Government recognises the role played by traditional dances in preserving Tanzania’s cultural heritage, but warned groups against operating outside established registration procedures.
“We urge traditional dance groups to register with Basata because registration enables them to be officially recognised and obtain permits to participate in exhibitions and other artistic activities in accordance with established procedures,” he said.
The requirement comes as traditional dance groups continue to attract large audiences across the country, creating opportunities for performers to showcase their skills and earn income from cultural activities.
Tulia Trust Information Officer Joshua Mwakanolo said traditional dances were an important part of Tanzania’s cultural heritage and should be supported as both a means of preserving culture and developing artistic talent.
He said festivals provided performers with an opportunity to showcase their abilities, gain exposure and secure opportunities to perform at other events.
“The strong response from groups participating in the festival shows that traditional dance continues to attract significant interest from the community,” Mr Mwakanolo said.
More than 120 traditional dance groups attended and participated in the festival, according to Mr Mwakanolo.
He said the turnout demonstrated the potential of traditional arts to bring young people together, develop talent and create economic opportunities.
The festival formed part of activities marking Tulia Trust’s 10th anniversary, bringing together traditional dance groups to showcase different forms of Tanzania’s cultural heritage.
