Simba SC kept pace with defending champions Yanga in the NBC Premier League title race after claiming a 2-0 victory over Azam FC in the Mzizima Derby at Azam Complex, Chamazi, on Wednesday.
Simba sealed the three points through an own goal by Azam defender Nathael Idumba and a second-half strike from Clatous Chama, extending their winning start and leaving them level on 18 points with leaders Yanga after six matches.
The result was another statement of intent from Simba, who remained second on goal difference, while Azam stayed third on 14 points after suffering defeat in a match in which neither side could break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes.
The first half was closely contested, with both teams showing attacking ambition while remaining cautious at the back.
Chances were created at either end, but neither side could produce the finishing touch needed to take control of the derby.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 58th minute when Idumba headed the ball into his own net following an attack initiated by Simba defender Rushine De Reuck.
The goal changed the complexion of the match, with Simba growing in confidence and putting Azam under increasing pressure as they searched for a second.
Their persistence paid off 10 minutes later when Chama found the net to double Simba's advantage and take his league tally to four goals this season.
Azam attempted to respond but could not find a way through Simba's defence, as the visitors protected their lead to the final whistle.
The victory lifted Simba to 18 points from six matches, the same tally as Yanga, with the two giants separated by goal difference. Azam remain third with 14 points.
With the season still in its early stages, the result adds further weight to the growing battle at the top of the table, with Simba and Yanga setting the pace while Azam seek to close the gap.
