Police sharpen communication skills amid fast-changing media landscape

By The Respondents Reporter

The Tanzania Police Force is stepping up efforts to improve how it communicates with the public as rapid changes in technology reshape the way people receive and share information.

Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) David Misime is leading a three-day capacity-building session for police information officers from headquarters, regions, units and police colleges at the Tanzania Police School in Moshi.

The training entered its third and final day on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, focusing on strengthening officers’ ability to provide timely security information, work effectively with the media and promote greater public cooperation in crime prevention.

The initiative comes at a time when social media and other digital platforms have become major channels through which members of the public obtain information about security incidents and other events.

The Police Force said strengthening the skills of its information officers would help ensure that the public receives relevant information on security matters and is better able to cooperate with police in preventing and addressing crime.

The training also seeks to improve relations between police information officers and media organisations, which remain an important channel for reaching large sections of the public.

DCP Misime is leading discussions aimed at helping officers adapt their communication approaches to the changing media environment and advances in communication technology.

The officers are drawn from different parts of the Police Force, with the training providing an opportunity to share experiences and improve coordination in handling public communication.

The Police Force said better communication would help strengthen public understanding of security issues and encourage communities to provide information that could assist in identifying and preventing crime.

The session is also expected to help police information officers respond more effectively to the demands of a rapidly changing communications environment while maintaining professional engagement with journalists and the public.
