President Hussein Ali Mwinyi has launched a joint CCM-ACT Wazalendo committee tasked with advancing political dialogue and strengthening Zanzibar’s reconciliation process.
The committee brings together representatives of the two parties as part of efforts to translate agreements reached between CCM and ACT Wazalendo into practical measures aimed at promoting political stability, unity and development.
Launching the committee at State House in Zanzibar on September 14, 2026, President Mwinyi urged its members to approach their responsibilities with integrity, mutual respect and a commitment to the interests of Zanzibar and its people.
He said the committee marked an important step in sustaining the reconciliation process and creating a platform through which political differences could be addressed through dialogue rather than confrontation.
“Put the interests of Zanzibar and its people first,” President Mwinyi told the members, stressing the importance of cooperation among political leaders and other stakeholders in maintaining peace and stability.
The President said the committee was part of the implementation of agreements reached between CCM and ACT Wazalendo, adding that continued dialogue was necessary to consolidate the gains made through the reconciliation process.
He also called on political leaders and other stakeholders to maintain cooperation in building a Zanzibar that enjoys peace, political stability and sustainable development.
President Mwinyi commended CCM and ACT Wazalendo leaders, other political actors, elders and former Zanzibar presidents Amani Abeid Karume and Ali Mohamed Shein for their contribution to the reconciliation process.
His remarks underline the administration’s emphasis on dialogue as a means of addressing political differences and strengthening cooperation between Zanzibar’s major political players.
ACT Wazalendo chairman Othman Masoud Othman said his party was ready to continue working with other stakeholders in building Zanzibar.
Mr Othman praised President Mwinyi for the steps taken to advance reconciliation, signalling ACT Wazalendo’s continued engagement in the process.
The formation of the joint committee gives the two parties a formal platform to follow up on commitments arising from their agreements and discuss issues affecting political relations in Zanzibar.
During the ceremony, President Mwinyi handed over the committee’s terms of reference to its two co-chairpersons, Omar Ali Sheikh of ACT Wazalendo and Abdi Mahmoud Abdi of CCM Zanzibar.
The committee’s work is expected to be closely watched as Zanzibar seeks to consolidate political reconciliation and create a more stable environment for development.
