The Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries has set its sights on improving its medal haul at this year’s SHIMIWI games, with Deputy Permanent Secretary Prof Mohammed Sheikh challenging its athletes to combine discipline, teamwork and determination in the three-week competition.
Prof Sheikh issued the challenge on Friday, September 18, 2026, as the ministry saw off a delegation of about 100 employees who will compete in different sporting disciplines in Kilimanjaro.
The athletes are expected to build on their performance at last year’s games in Mwanza, with Prof Sheikh urging them to return with more trophies.
“I know you are paid allowances, but your commitment and willingness to give your best are greater than the allowances you receive. I commend you because not everyone can make such a commitment,” Prof Sheikh said.
He said discipline would be critical throughout the competition, urging the athletes to respect one another and maintain peace regardless of the results of individual events.
Prof Sheikh also called for unity among members of the delegation, saying each athlete should support colleagues even when competing in different disciplines.
“Remain united and support one another. You should also ensure that you maintain peace and happiness throughout the games,” he said.
The ministry’s Sports Secretary, Salamala Masoud, said about 100 employees would represent the ministry in football, tug of war, long- and short-distance races, bao and darts.
The games are scheduled to begin on September 20, 2026, in Kilimanjaro and will run for about three weeks.
The annual SHIMIWI competitions bring together government employees from different ministries and public institutions, providing a platform for competition, physical fitness and interaction among public servants.
For the Livestock and Fisheries Ministry team, the immediate task will be to turn its preparation and commitment into results on the field as it seeks to improve on last year’s showing in Mwanza.
