Kilosa steps up push for voluntary tax compliance

By The Respondents Reporter

Kilosa District authorities have stepped up efforts to improve tax compliance among traders and residents, with officials calling for stronger cooperation between the district administration and the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).

The move follows a meeting between Kilosa District Commissioner Shaka Hamdu Shaka and TRA Morogoro Regional Manager Husna Nyange, held at the district commissioner's office.

The discussions focused on increasing public understanding of tax obligations and encouraging residents and businesses to pay taxes voluntarily, which officials said would help support development in the district and the wider country.

The two sides also discussed measures to curb informal business activities while creating a more supportive environment for traders and investors.

Mr Shaka said tax payments were an important source of funding for public development, urging residents and businesses to meet their tax obligations.

“Your taxes are what build our Kilosa and our Tanzania. It is our collective responsibility to pay taxes for the development of our country,” he said.

The district administration and TRA are expected to strengthen public education on taxation as part of efforts to improve compliance and reduce misunderstandings between businesses and tax authorities.

The initiative is also aimed at creating a business environment that can attract more investment and strengthen Kilosa's role as a commercial centre in Morogoro Region.

For traders and small businesses, improved awareness of tax requirements could help them better understand their obligations while reducing the risks associated with operating outside the formal tax system.
