Govt calls for more investment in livestock, fisheries

The government has urged investors to put more capital into livestock and fisheries, while calling for urgent action to reduce the cost and shortage of feed that continues to constrain production.

Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Ng’wasi Damas Kamani said increased investment in the two sectors would help raise food production, create jobs and expand economic opportunities for Tanzanians.

He made the remarks yesterday, September 14, 2026, during a working visit to livestock and aquaculture investors in Magu District, Mwanza Region, where he inspected production activities at Tangreen Farming Company and M/S ROFI Farming Company Limited.

Mr Kamani said investors should go beyond increasing production and ensure that workers operate in safe conditions and receive their basic rights and welfare.

“Investment must translate into increased production, jobs and better opportunities for people, while workers’ safety and welfare must also be protected,” he said.

He also encouraged communities living around investment projects to take advantage of the skills and technologies introduced by investors.

He said acquiring such skills would enable local people to improve productivity and establish their own businesses in livestock keeping, fish farming and related activities.

However, Mr Kamani said the government needed to address production bottlenecks, particularly the availability and cost of feed for livestock and fish.

He directed government experts to step up efforts to increase the production of quality feed in sufficient quantities and at affordable prices.

Reducing feed costs, he said, would help livestock keepers and fish farmers expand production and improve the profitability of their businesses.

Feed is a critical input in both livestock and aquaculture production, meaning shortages or high prices can increase production costs and limit farmers’ ability to expand.

Mr Kamani said the government would continue working with the private sector and other stakeholders to remove barriers to investment and increase production in the two sectors.

He said stronger collaboration would also help create employment and increase the contribution of livestock and fisheries to the national economy.

The visit was part of government efforts to strengthen engagement with private investors and ensure that communities benefit from investment opportunities in the livestock and fisheries sectors.
