The government has allocated TZS3 billion in the 2026/27 financial year to begin construction of a new Maternal and Child Health Building at Kagera Regional Referral Hospital.
Deputy Minister for Health Florence Samizi said construction is expected to start in December 2026, following the completion of the project’s design and the ongoing process to select a contractor.
Dr Samizi made the remarks in Parliament on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, while responding on behalf of Health Minister Mohamed Mchengerwa to a question from Bukoba Urban MP Johnston Johansen Mtasindwa.
The MP had asked when the government would begin construction of the facility, which is expected to strengthen maternal and child healthcare services at the regional referral hospital.
Dr Samizi said the government had completed the building’s design and was now in the final stages of securing a contractor for the project.
“Construction is expected to commence in December 2026,” she said.
The new facility is expected to expand the hospital’s capacity to provide maternal and child health services and improve the environment in which women and children receive treatment.
Dr Samizi said the investment was part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen health infrastructure and improve access to quality and reliable healthcare services across the country.
She added that the government would continue investing in health facilities to bring essential services closer to citizens and improve the quality of care.
