Speaker of the National Assembly Mussa Azzan Zungu has received the name of the candidate proposed for the position of Vice President, paving the way for parliamentary consideration.

The proposed name was submitted to Mr Zungu on August 28, 2026, by Presidential Secretary Ali Jabir Mwadini, who was accompanied by the President’s Aide-de-Camp (ADC), Brigadier General Nyamburi Mashauri.

The nomination follows a recommendation by the Central Committee of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and will now be presented to Parliament for consideration and confirmation in accordance with the Constitution.

The handover was witnessed by Deputy Speaker Daniel Sillo, Attorney General Hamza Johari and Clerk of the National Assembly Baraka Leonard.

The development follows President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s acceptance of Emmanuel John Nchimbi’s resignation as Vice President. His resignation is scheduled to take effect on September 4, 2026.

The parliamentary confirmation of the proposed Vice President will determine the next holder of the country’s second-highest constitutional office.
