Zambia has expressed interest in strengthening healthcare cooperation with Tanzania by exploring specialist medical services offered at Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital, underscoring the growing role of Tanzania as a regional destination for advanced healthcare.
The development emerged during a visit by Zambia's Secretary to the Cabinet, Mr Patrick Kangwa, to the Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital exhibition stand, which is jointly showcasing with the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) at the Tanzania Pavilion during the 98th Agriculture and Commercial Show in Lusaka.
During the visit, Mr Kangwa commended Tanzania's investment in specialist healthcare, particularly in cardiology, orthopaedics, spinal surgery and reproductive health services.
He said the availability of such services within the region presents an opportunity for citizens of Zambia and neighbouring countries to access advanced treatment without travelling long distances outside Southern Africa.
He noted that improved access to specialist care could help reduce treatment costs and waiting times for patients while strengthening economic cooperation through the health sector.
Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital has increasingly positioned itself as a centre for specialised healthcare, serving patients from different parts of Tanzania and attracting interest from neighbouring countries within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Officials at the exhibition said the hospital's presence in Lusaka aims to showcase Tanzania's growing healthcare capacity and promote cross-border partnerships in medical services.
The stand has attracted healthcare professionals, policymakers and members of the public seeking information on specialist treatment options available in Tanzania.
The interest shown by Zambian stakeholders highlights the expanding role of healthcare in regional integration and reflects broader efforts by Tanzania to develop medical tourism and improve access to advanced treatment across the SADC region.
