A TZS 1.2 billion bridge under construction in Kilosa District is expected to ease transport challenges and improve access to markets and social services for thousands of residents in Morogoro Region.
The 30-metre steel bridge, being built across the Nyameni River in Ulaya Ward, is one of the key infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening connectivity between the wards of Zombo, Nyameni and Ulaya. The project is being implemented by the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA).
Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Prof Riziki Shemdoe, said the project would provide a lasting solution to transport disruptions that have affected residents since the collapse of the previous bridge.
Speaking during an inspection tour of development projects in Kilosa District on August 6, Prof Shemdoe said the bridge reflects the government's efforts to improve rural infrastructure and support local economic activities.
“The bridge will remove a major transport bottleneck and improve the movement of people, goods and services across the area,” he said.
According to the minister, construction has reached 85 percent and is expected to be completed by August 30, 2026, after the arrival of the remaining steel components currently being shipped to the country.
Morogoro Regional TARURA Manager, Eng Emmanuel Ndyamkama, said installation of the steel structure will be undertaken by experienced TARURA engineers who previously handled a similar project in Mlimba, Kilombero District.
He said the bridge has been designed to accommodate vehicles weighing more than 40 tonnes and will include dedicated pedestrian walkways to enhance safety for users.
“The bridge will significantly improve accessibility throughout the year and support the transportation of agricultural produce and other goods,” he said.
Mr Ndyamkama added that the rope bridge currently used by residents to cross the river will be relocated to another area facing similar connectivity challenges.
Residents have welcomed the project, expressing optimism that it will improve livelihoods and access to essential services.
Ms Fatuma Mwalimu Chaubwa, a resident of Ulaya Ward, said the bridge would reduce travel difficulties and open up new economic opportunities for communities on both sides of the river.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to facilitate trade, improve access to health and education services, attract investment and strengthen links between rural communities and major markets in the district.
