Tanzania, World Bank discuss priorities to drive economic development

By Our Correspondent, Dodoma

Tanzania has held talks with a senior World Bank official on strengthening development cooperation, with discussions focusing on areas that could help accelerate economic growth and expand opportunities for citizens.

Finance Minister Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar participated in a meeting between Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba and the World Bank Executive Director representing the First Constituency of African countries, Dr Zarau Wendeline Kibwe, at the Prime Minister’s Office in Dodoma on Friday, August 28, 2026.

The talks centred on strengthening the partnership between Tanzania and the World Bank and identifying priority areas of cooperation to support the country’s economic and social development agenda.

The engagement is significant as Tanzania continues to pursue investment and development financing for strategic projects while seeking to sustain economic growth and ensure that its benefits reach a wider section of the population.

Mr Omar’s participation also highlights the Ministry of Finance’s role in coordinating development financing and supporting the implementation of national priorities through partnerships with multilateral institutions.

The World Bank is among Tanzania’s longstanding development partners, supporting programmes in key sectors such as infrastructure, education, health, agriculture and private-sector development.

The bank has also supported efforts to strengthen economic management and public financial management, areas that are critical to improving the efficiency of public resources and creating a stronger foundation for sustainable growth.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the government and the World Bank to review areas where closer cooperation could help unlock further development opportunities, particularly through investment in strategic projects and programmes designed to promote inclusive growth.

The discussions come at a time when Tanzania is seeking to expand its productive capacity, attract more investment and strengthen economic opportunities as it advances its long-term development ambitions.

Also attending the meeting were Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance Elija Mwandumbya, Assistant Commissioner for External Finance Patrick Pima, Assistant Commissioner for Policy Analysis Mbayani Saruni and other senior ministry officials.
