President Samia Suluhu Hassan has met with senior leaders of the Catholic Church in Tanzania to discuss key national issues, including peace, unity, development and the role of religious leaders in promoting a responsible and ethical society.
The meeting took place on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the State House in Chamwino, Dodoma, according to a statement from the President’s Office.
President Samia held discussions with leaders of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC), highlighting the importance of continued dialogue between the government and religious institutions on issues affecting the country and its citizens.
According to the statement, the President reaffirmed her commitment to consulting and involving religious leaders and other groups in discussions on important national matters that shape Tanzania’s future.
The engagement comes as religious institutions continue to play an important role in promoting peace, social cohesion, moral values and accountability within communities.
The Catholic Church leaders who attended the meeting included TEC President Bishop Wolfgang Pisa, OFM Cap, who is also the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Lindi.
Others were TEC Vice President Bishop Eusebius Nzigilwa, who is also the Bishop of Mpanda Diocese, and Archbishop Protase Cardinal Rugambwa of the Archdiocese of Tabora.
The delegation also included Archbishop Renatus Nkwande of the Archdiocese of Mwanza, Archbishop Isaac Amani of the Archdiocese of Arusha, Archbishop Beatus Kinyaia of the Archdiocese of Dodoma, and TEC Secretary General Father Dr Charles Kitima.
The meeting underscores the importance of maintaining open channels of communication between the government and faith leaders, particularly on matters that directly affect citizens and the wider society.
For citizens, such engagement can provide an important platform for discussing social and economic challenges, strengthening national unity and encouraging greater accountability in public life.
