Dar es Salaam’s public transport landscape is set for a major transformation following the official opening of the second phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) infrastructure, aimed at improving mobility, reducing travel time and easing congestion in the country’s busiest city.
The new BRT infrastructure was officially inaugurated today, August 7, 2026, by President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, marking a significant step in the expansion of the city’s modern transport network.
The second phase is expected to increase access to reliable public transport services for thousands of commuters while improving connections between residential areas, business centres and other key parts of Dar es Salaam.
The expansion comes amid growing demand for efficient urban transport solutions as the city continues to experience rapid population and economic growth.
Transport experts have noted that expanding mass transit systems such as BRT is critical in addressing traffic congestion, improving commuter experiences and supporting economic productivity by reducing time spent on daily journeys.
The project is part of the government’s wider investment in urban infrastructure aimed at creating a more organised, efficient and sustainable transport system for Dar es Salaam residents.
For daily commuters, the new BRT phase is expected to bring improved convenience, with faster movement across the city and a more predictable public transport experience.
The opening of the infrastructure adds to ongoing efforts to modernise Dar es Salaam’s transport system and respond to the growing needs of one of East Africa’s fastest-growing cities.
