The government has opened submissions for the fifth edition of the Mwalimu Nyerere National Creative Writing Awards, inviting Tanzanian writers to compete for recognition in four literary categories.

The submission window opens on August 20, 2026, with winners expected to be announced and awarded on April 13, 2027, the anniversary of the birth of Tanzania’s founding President, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

Minister for Education, Science and Technology Prof Adolf Mkenda announced the opening yesterday in Tanga, urging writers to use the competition to strengthen Kiswahili literature and document Tanzania’s culture and identity.

Prof Mkenda said the award had grown into a significant literary platform, offering writers an opportunity to have their work recognised while contributing to the development of Kiswahili.

“The Mwalimu Nyerere National Creative Writing Award has become one of the leading literary awards in the world,” Prof Mkenda said.

He said greater participation by Tanzanian writers would help produce more literary works that capture the country’s history, culture and social experiences in greater depth.

The minister also commended the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) for coordinating the awards through a preparatory committee chaired by Prof Penina Mlama.

Prof Mlama said the committee would accept entries in four categories: novels, drama, poetry and children’s literature.

The opening of the competition comes as Tanzania seeks to further promote Kiswahili as an important tool for education, cultural expression and preservation of the country’s heritage.

For aspiring and established writers, the awards provide a platform to showcase their work, reach wider audiences and contribute to Tanzania’s growing literary sector.
