For the Saitoti family, who voluntarily relocated from Nainokanoka Ward in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Msomera village in Handeni District, a wedding celebration has become a powerful symbol of a new chapter shaped by stability, opportunity and hope.
On July 18, 2026, Evaline Saitoti, a young Maasai woman who resettled in Msomera with her family, married an American national currently living in Zanzibar. For her relatives, the occasion represented more than a personal milestone it reflected the transformation they say has followed their move to the new settlement.
Her elder brother, Emmanuel Saitoti, said the family has experienced improved living conditions since relocating, citing better access to education, healthcare, electricity, roads and communication services.
"Our life in Msomera is very different from what we experienced in Ngorongoro. We now have access to essential social services while continuing to practise our traditional culture in a peaceful and secure environment," he said.
He said the family has settled well into the community and is optimistic about its future.
"We have established a new home, and today we are celebrating one of the happiest moments in our family's history. Watching my sister start her own family here is a blessing and a reminder of how much our lives have changed," Emmanuel said.
According to him, the opportunities available in Msomera have enabled the family to plan for the future with confidence.
"This community has given us the chance to work, develop and build our lives with hope. It has truly become our home," he added.
The wedding brought together relatives, friends and members of the local community, serving not only as a celebration of marriage but also as a reflection of the family's journey of resettlement and integration.
The Saitoti family's experience is among those emerging from the government's voluntary relocation programme from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Msomera, where resettled households have been provided with land and access to basic social infrastructure as part of efforts to improve livelihoods while supporting conservation objectives.
