The Tanzania Wheelchair Basketball Association (TWBA) is intensifying efforts to develop wheelchair basketball talent through its 3x3 programme as it seeks to strengthen the country's player pipeline and build a competitive national team for international competitions.
TWBA Vice Chairperson, Engineer Leonard Marango, said the initiative forms part of the association's long-term strategy to expand participation in the sport while identifying and nurturing talented players from the grassroots.
Speaking on July 18, 2026, Marango said the association is investing in structured player development to equip athletes with the technical skills and competitive experience required for 3x3 wheelchair basketball.
"The programme provides a strong foundation for discovering emerging talent and preparing players for national and international competitions," he said.
Marango noted that the fast-paced 3x3 format has become an effective pathway for developing players, raising the standard of competition and strengthening Tanzania's national wheelchair basketball team.
Meanwhile, TWBA coach Robert Manyerere said regular training sessions are being conducted at the JMK Youth Park for a diverse group of participants, including secondary school students, college students and people with disabilities.
He said the programme focuses on teaching the rules of the game, improving technical and tactical skills, and identifying players with the potential to compete at higher levels.
"The aim is to create more opportunities for young athletes while building a strong talent pool that will support the continued growth of wheelchair basketball in Tanzania," Manyerere said.
He added that TWBA will continue collaborating with schools, institutions and other stakeholders to expand the reach of the 3x3 programme, ensuring more young people have access to the sport and helping prepare the next generation of players to represent Tanzania successfully on the international stage.
