Police in Shinyanga Region have arrested the district chairperson of the Chadema youth wing (BAVICHA), Alfred Masanja, over allegations that he mobilised young people to participate in planned demonstrations on July 7, 2026.

Masanja, 43, a resident of Ndala in Shinyanga Municipality, was taken into custody after police alleged that he encouraged youths from different groups to join demonstrations that were expected to take place in various parts of the region.

Shinyanga Regional Police Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Janeth Magomi, confirmed the arrest on Friday, July 17, 2026, saying investigations into the matter were underway.

“The Shinyanga Regional Police Force is continuing with interviews and investigations involving the suspect. After the investigations are completed, the appropriate legal steps will be taken in accordance with the laws of the country,” SACP Magomi said.

She said police would handle the matter through established legal procedures, while calling on citizens to continue maintaining peace and respecting the law.

The police commander warned individuals against engaging in activities that could threaten public order, saying security authorities would take action against anyone found violating the law.

“The police force urges citizens to avoid acts that may disrupt peace and security. We will not hesitate to take action against anyone who attempts to disturb peace,” she said.

SACP Magomi also appealed to residents to cooperate with security organs and continue carrying out their daily activities peacefully as investigations proceed.

The arrest comes as authorities continue reminding citizens that public gatherings and demonstrations must follow procedures provided under the country’s laws to ensure security and public order.
