Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi has directed the contractor implementing the Songea–Tunduru–Masasi 220kV electricity transmission project to speed up construction, warning that delays are affecting the Government’s plans to deliver reliable power to citizens in southern Tanzania.
The minister raised concern over the slow pace of work during an inspection of the project in Tunduru District, Ruvuma Region, on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, saying the current progress does not match expectations for a project of such importance.
He instructed the contractor, Kalpataru Power of India, to increase its workforce and resources on site and ensure that all conditions outlined in the contract are followed.
“Progress on this project is not satisfactory compared with the time that has passed since implementation started. We expect to see greater speed in the remaining period,” Mr Ndejembi said.
He directed the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy to closely monitor implementation and ensure appropriate action is taken if there are no significant improvements by September 30, 2026.
The project is among major electricity investments aimed at expanding Tanzania’s national grid and improving access to dependable power for households, businesses and industries.
Upon completion, the transmission line will connect Lindi and Mtwara regions to the National Grid through Songea, Tunduru and Masasi, improving electricity reliability in areas that have experienced power supply challenges.
The project is expected to support economic activities, attract new investments and improve social services by providing a stable electricity supply in the southern corridor.
Residents and businesses in Tunduru and neighbouring areas are among the expected beneficiaries once the project becomes operational, as improved power availability will create better opportunities for productive activities and local development.
Nyasa District Commissioner Boniface Magiri, representing the Ruvuma Regional Commissioner, said the regional leadership would continue working with the Government to follow up on implementation and ensure the project is completed on schedule.
Sikudhani Chikambo, speaking on behalf of Ruvuma legislators, commended the Government’s continued investment in electricity infrastructure, saying the project would contribute to economic growth and improve the quality of public services in the region.
The Songea–Tunduru–Masasi 220kV transmission project is being implemented by Kalpataru Power from India and is part of Government efforts to strengthen the country’s electricity transmission network and expand reliable power supply to more Tanzanians.
