Muhimbili, Jasmine Kikwete explore strategic partnership to boost health sector

The Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) has intensified efforts to expand its collaboration with development partners following high-level discussions between its Executive Director, Dr Delilah Kimambo, and the Commonwealth Tourism and Investment Ambassador, Jasmine Kikwete.

The meeting focused on identifying strategic areas of cooperation that could enhance healthcare delivery, promote medical tourism, and strengthen Tanzania's position as a regional hub for specialised and super-specialised healthcare services.

During the discussions, Dr Kimambo reaffirmed Muhimbili's commitment to forging partnerships with local and international institutions to improve healthcare services, medical research, professional training, and investment in the health sector.

She said such collaborations are essential in supporting the hospital's long-term vision of delivering world-class healthcare while expanding access to advanced medical services for Tanzanians and patients from across the region.

"Our goal is to continue building strong partnerships that will enhance service delivery, research, training and investment in the health sector," Dr Kimambo said during the meeting.

For her part, Ambassador Jasmine Kikwete underscored the importance of strategic partnerships in advancing both healthcare and medical tourism.

She noted that Muhimbili's growing capacity to provide specialised and super-specialised medical services has significantly enhanced Tanzania's international reputation and presents an opportunity to attract greater investment and international collaboration.

According to Ms Kikwete, strengthening institutions such as Muhimbili will not only improve healthcare outcomes but also position Tanzania as a preferred destination for patients seeking high-quality treatment within Africa, reducing the need for outbound medical referrals.

The meeting reflects the government's broader efforts to leverage partnerships to improve the quality of healthcare services while promoting medical tourism as an emerging contributor to economic growth.

Muhimbili National Hospital has in recent years expanded its specialised treatment capacity through investments in modern medical equipment, infrastructure and highly trained professionals, enabling it to handle increasingly complex cases that were previously referred abroad.

Officials believe that continued collaboration with development partners and investment stakeholders will further accelerate the hospital's transformation into a centre of excellence serving both Tanzania and the wider East and Central African region.
