The government has temporarily suspended permits for political rallies across Tanzania, citing security concerns linked to alleged incitement to violence ahead of and after the upcoming Saba Saba celebrations.
Minister for Home Affairs Patrobas Katambi announced the directive in Parliament in Dodoma on Friday, June 26, 2026, instructing the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Camillius Wambura, to halt the issuance of permits for public political meetings until further notice.
Mr Katambi said intelligence reports indicate that calls for violence circulating before and after the July 7 celebrations are largely being driven through political mobilisation, making the temporary suspension necessary to safeguard public order.
“Whether it is Chama Cha Mapinduzi or any other political party, public political rallies should be suspended. Let us use this period to allow wananchi to continue with their income-generating activities in peace,” he said.
The minister said the measure applies to all political parties without exception and is intended to preserve peace and stability during the period.
Mr Katambi also disclosed that police had arrested several suspects allegedly involved in mobilising violence through various channels.
He directed IGP Wambura to intensify surveillance in areas considered to pose security risks and, where necessary, temporarily suspend activities in such locations pending investigations.
“The Police Force has already arrested some individuals suspected of involvement in inciting violence. I have instructed the Inspector General of Police to closely monitor all areas of concern and, where necessary, temporarily close operations until investigations are completed,” he said.
The government has maintained that the measures are aimed at protecting public safety while ensuring that citizens continue with their normal economic and social activities without disruption.
