Four people have died and 29 others have been injured following a bus accident involving a passenger vehicle belonging to Mwasote Company in Mbeya Region.

The accident occurred on May 31, 2026, at around 9:10 a.m. in the Maji Mazuri area along the Mbeya–Chunya road.

Mbeya Regional Police Commander, Benjamin Kuzaga, confirmed the incident on June 1, saying the bus, registration number T134 DFB, a Mitsubishi model, was travelling from Mbeya City to Chunya District when it lost control, veered off the road and overturned.

The vehicle was being driven by Nehemia Sanga (50), a resident of Uyole in Mbeya City.

According to preliminary police findings, the driver failed to maintain control of the bus while approaching a sharp corner, causing the accident.

“The accident resulted in the deaths of four passengers, three men and one woman,” said Commander Kuzaga.

He identified two of the deceased as Hamza (30) and Matrida Mwabanganya, believed to be between 30 and 36 years old.

A total of 29 passengers sustained injuries, including 24 men and five women. Of these, 11 were admitted at the Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital for further treatment, while 18 received outpatient services.

All injured victims were rushed to the Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital, where they continue to receive medical care.

Commander Kuzaga added that the driver was also injured and is receiving treatment under police guard.

Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing, while urging drivers to observe road safety regulations, especially when approaching sharp bends and other high-risk sections of highways, in order to reduce avoidable road accidents.
