Rio Ferdinand captivated by Serengeti Safari, witnesses great migration and lions up close

Former Manchester United and England football star Rio Ferdinand has expressed admiration for Tanzania’s wildlife after experiencing a hot air balloon safari over the world-famous Serengeti National Park, where he witnessed the spectacular wildebeest migration and observed lions at close range.

Ferdinand undertook the safari experience alongside Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Paul Makonda during his visit to the northern tourism circuit in May 2026.

The balloon flight offered him a sweeping aerial view of the vast Serengeti plains, one of Africa’s most iconic ecosystems.

From above, the football legend saw thousands of wildebeest moving across the plains in their annual migration, accompanied by zebras and other wildlife species.

The movement, regarded as one of the greatest natural spectacles in the world, continues to attract international visitors to Tanzania every year.

Upon landing, Ferdinand also had the opportunity to observe lions at close range shortly after arriving at Seronera airstrip inside the park.

He described the experience as a long-held dream, saying it gave him a rare chance to see wildlife in its natural habitat.

Tanzania remains one of the leading wildlife tourism destinations in Africa, with the Serengeti National Park standing at the center of its tourism industry.

The park is globally recognized for hosting the annual wildebeest migration, a natural cycle involving over a million wildebeest moving in search of fresh grazing areas.

The country is also home to one of the largest lion populations in the world, estimated at more than 17,000 lions across various national parks and conservation areas.

This rich wildlife presence continues to strengthen Tanzania’s position as a key destination for eco-tourism and conservation-based travel.

Tourism officials say visits by global personalities such as Ferdinand help promote Tanzania’s image internationally and attract more tourists to explore its national parks.

They note that such exposure contributes to increased awareness of conservation efforts and supports local economies that depend on tourism.

The Serengeti experience adds to Tanzania’s growing reputation as a premium destination for wildlife and nature tourism, offering unique experiences that combine adventure, conservation, and natural beauty.
