The National Sports Council (NSC) will host the fourth edition of its annual Sports Awards on May 9 this year at the Super Dome in Masaki, Dar es Salaam, in an event aimed at celebrating excellence in Tanzanian sports.

Speaking to journalists on April 21, 2026, Chairperson of the NSC Awards Committee, Prof. Madundo Mtambo, said preparations for the ceremony are already underway, with organisers working to ensure a high-profile and well-coordinated event.

He said the awards are designed to recognise and honour athletes and teams that delivered outstanding performances in international competitions during the 2025 sporting season.

“The objective is to appreciate the dedication and achievements of our athletes, who continue to raise Tanzania’s profile on the international stage and bring pride to the nation,” Prof. Mtambo said.

He noted that this will be the fourth consecutive edition of the awards, following successful ceremonies held in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

He added that the event is expected to bring together more than 1,000 participants, including athletes, coaches, sports officials, government and private sector representatives, journalists and other stakeholders.

According to him, the awards have become an important platform for motivating athletes and strengthening public appreciation of sports development in the country.

“The awards have significantly boosted morale among athletes and encouraged stronger performance in international competitions, while also increasing public awareness of the growth of the sports sector,” he said.

Prof. Mtambo outlined the categories for this year’s edition, which include Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete, Best Young Male and Female Athlete, as well as Best Para-Athlete for both men and women.

Other categories are Best National Team (men and women), Best Club Team (men and women), Best Coach of the Year (men and women), Best School Athlete, Best Referee (men and women), and Best Sports Journalist (men and women).

Special honours will also be awarded in categories such as Sports Legend of the Year, the People’s Choice Best Athlete Award, and Media Legend recognition.

On the People’s Choice Award, Prof. Mtambo said fans will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred athlete by sending the nominee’s name via WhatsApp to +255 689 553 63.

He further called on companies, government institutions, private organisations and individuals to support the NSC in making the event a success, stressing that strong stakeholder participation is key to advancing sports development in Tanzania.

The NSC Sports Awards have grown into one of the most important events on the national sports calendar, celebrating achievement, inspiring athletes and highlighting the country’s progress across various sporting disciplines.
