TANESCO empowers South Coast communities with electricity awareness

Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has intensified efforts to educate its customers along the South Coast on electricity access, safety, and service procedures, reinforcing the importance of responsible energy use.

During an outreach programme in Juani and Jibondo villages in Mafia District, Acting TANESCO Manager for Mafia, Fortidas Ishabairu, highlighted that the initiative aims to enhance public understanding of new electricity projects implemented jointly by TANESCO and the Rural Energy Agency (REA).

“Our goal is to ensure that residents understand the roles and responsibilities of TANESCO and REA, and how the two institutions collaborate to bring reliable electricity to island communities,” Ishabairu said.

Residents were guided on their right to access electricity through formal channels, including the Nikonekt application system, and four additional procedures designed to streamline service delivery while ensuring safety and infrastructure protection.

The sessions also covered clean energy solutions, current electricity availability, and ongoing improvements to the Nikonekt system to enhance customer experience.

On safety, Ishabairu warned communities against conducting activities under power lines and emphasized maintaining a minimum distance of five metres from electrical installations.

He urged the use of contractors licensed by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), provided guidance on identifying qualified contractors, and advised reporting individuals soliciting bribes, commonly known as “vishoka.”

“TANESCO continues to invest in preventive maintenance and system upgrades to improve electricity reliability. Our projects aim to address challenges and ensure consistent service delivery,” he added.

Village leaders praised the government and TANESCO for prioritizing electricity access in remote islands. Juani Village Chairperson, Mwichande Bakari, pledged to protect electricity infrastructure and collaborate with authorities to ensure sustainable use.

Jibondo Village Chairperson, Hassani Amri Mohamedi, encouraged residents to follow all technical guidance provided by TANESCO to maximize benefits and ensure safety.

The programme reflects TANESCO’s commitment to customer engagement, reliable service, and the national agenda to expand electricity access while promoting safe, responsible energy consumption.
