Police probe death of suspect in custody

The Kilimanjaro Regional Police Command has opened an investigation into the death of an 18-year-old suspect who died while in custody at Moshi Central Police Station.

The deceased, identified as Michael Lambau, a resident of Karikacha Street in Rau Ward, Moshi Municipality, was being held in connection with an assault case.

Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander, SACP Simon Maigwa, said the incident occurred on January 13, 2026, shortly after the suspect’s arrest.

According to SACP Maigwa, Lambau had been detained on allegations of causing bodily harm to his uncle, Brian Felix.

Police records indicate that the suspect was arrested on the same day and placed in lawful custody as investigations into the assault continued.

Police further revealed that the suspect had earlier been linked to a separate serious criminal case dating back to November 22, 2025, in which he was alleged to have been involved in the killing of his biological father.

He reportedly went into hiding following that incident and was later apprehended in connection with the assault case.

The Regional Police Commander said investigations are underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death, in line with police procedures governing deaths occurring in custody. He added that the findings will be made public upon completion of the inquiry.
