By The Respondents Reporter

Residents of Zanzibar have gained a major boost in access to quality education following the official opening of Chukwani Secondary School by Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba on January 5, 2026, during the celebrations marking the 62nd anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution.

Built at a cost of TZS 6.1 billion, the new school is expected to ease pressure on existing secondary schools while creating more learning opportunities for children in the area.

The facility is designed to equip students with knowledge, practical skills, creativity and good values by combining classroom lessons with hands-on learning, in line with the needs of today’s society and job market.

Speaking at the event, Dr Nchemba said the school reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring every child has access to quality education in a safe and supportive environment.

He noted that investing in education infrastructure is an investment in citizens, as it prepares young people to become productive and responsible members of society.

He commended the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, for prioritising the education sector through increased funding and development of modern schools.

According to Dr Nchemba, such investments directly benefit families by reducing education costs and improving learning outcomes.

For parents and students in Chukwani and surrounding areas, the new school means shorter travel distances, improved facilities and better chances for academic success, contributing to broader social and economic development in Zanzibar.
