Airtel expands rural network coverage with new towers in Morogoro and Kilimanjaro

Airtel Tanzania has stepped up efforts to deepen digital inclusion with the installation of three new communication towers in the Morogoro and Kilimanjaro regions, a development expected to boost rural connectivity, elevate service quality and support socio-economic growth in underserved areas.

The new sites two in Morogoro’s Gairo District (Magoweko Ward) and Kihonda VETA, and one in Sanya Juu, Hai District in Kilimanjaro are set to ease long-standing communication challenges and expand access to digital services for thousands of residents.

Airtel Tanzania says the latest investment aligns with the government’s push to extend reliable communications infrastructure nationwide.

Speaking during the launch, the company’s Kilimanjaro Zonal Manager, Faustine Mtui, said improved connectivity is key to unlocking economic opportunities and empowering young people in remote communities.

“Our focus remains on delivering reliable, affordable, and inclusive network coverage to underserved areas,” he said, adding that stronger connectivity will help bridge regional digital gaps and stimulate local innovation.

In Gairo District alone, more than 300 young people are already working as Airtel Money agents. The company expects the new tower to generate additional employment and expand access to financial and commercial services.

Local leaders welcomed the development, describing it as a major step forward for rural communities. Shabani Sajilo, councilor for Magoweko Ward, highlighted the difficulties residents faced for years due to poor communication services.

“The lack of a reliable network disrupted economic activities, slowed business operations and complicated emergency responses. This tower is a long-awaited solution that will significantly improve productivity in our community,” he said.

Residents echoed similar sentiments. Happy Sembwa, a resident of Magoweko, said the improved service will open new opportunities in digital learning, e-commerce and access to public information.

“Poor communication made it hard to access key services, transact digitally or reach family members in times of need. With Airtel’s network now available, we expect a transformation in how people work and learn,” she said.

To mark the launch, Airtel rolled out a three-day promotion for users connected through the new towers, offering 50 cross-network minutes, 500MB of data and 50 SMS.

The new towers represent another milestone in Airtel Tanzania’s strategy to expand rural coverage, strengthen community safety and support the country’s digital economy.
