PASS trust celebrates 25 years of transforming Tanzanian agriculture

By The Respondents Reporter

PASS Trust has been quietly transforming Tanzania’s agricultural landscape, connecting farmers to financial resources, knowledge, and markets that turn their labor into sustainable livelihoods.

This milestone was celebrated in Dar es Salaam this week, bringing together government officials, financial institutions, and agribusiness stakeholders from across the country.

Adam Kamanda, Business Director and representative of the Managing Director of PASS Trust, said the institution was founded through a partnership between the Government of Tanzania and Denmark.

“Our goal has always been to empower farmers, promote agribusiness, livestock farming, and forest conservation, and increase investment in agriculture through financial institutions,” he explained.

The forum united stakeholders from Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Zanzibar, and coastal regions, including farmers and agribusiness leaders from Njombe, Arusha, Kahama, Moshi, and Bukoba.

Kamanda highlighted that this platform allows participants to discuss challenges, explore opportunities, and create practical solutions that benefit farmers directly.

This year alone, PASS Trust has provided guarantees worth TZS 2.4 trillion, helping farmers access loans and invest in modern farming techniques.

Under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership, the government has contributed TZS 1.2 trillion to agriculture, focusing on irrigation farming to enhance productivity and resilience.

Hadija Seif, Relationship Manager at Partners Bank, said the partnership with PASS Trust has already made a tangible difference.

“Our portfolio under PASS exceeds TZS 8 billion. Farmers are now able to access funding, invest in better equipment, and improve yields,” she said, noting that challenges such as market access, farming inputs, and agricultural education still need urgent attention.

Daniel Sumpo from Equity Bank added that smallholder farmers often face difficulties securing loans. “Through PASS Trust guarantees, farmers can now obtain capital and high-quality inputs, increasing both productivity and income,” he said.

The 25th-anniversary celebrations underscored PASS Trust’s role as more than a financial institution. By connecting farmers to funding, markets, and knowledge, the forum shows how sustainable agriculture can drive growth in local communities while contributing to Tanzania’s broader economic development.
