New TANESCO plant to boost electricity supply in Mtwara and Lindi

By Charles Kombe, Mtwara

Residents and businesses in southern Tanzania are set to enjoy more reliable electricity as TANESCO begins testing its new gas-powered power plant at Mtwara II.

The facility, scheduled for official inauguration on October 27, 2025, will increase electricity capacity in Mtwara and Lindi to 70 megawatts, a significant boost for the region.

Acting TANESCO Director of Customer Services, Irene Gowelle, said the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing reliable power under its sixth-phase development agenda.

“This plant is a major milestone. Its early completion means households and businesses will soon benefit from more stable electricity, which is crucial for economic growth, education, and daily life,” said Gowelle.

Mtwara Regional Commissioner, Colonel Patrick Sewala, will officially launch the plant, which Gowelle described as a game-changer for regional energy security and development.

Acting Deputy Director of Electricity Generation at TANESCO, Engineer Antony Mbushi, said the new facility adds 20 megawatts to the southern region, raising total capacity from 50.5 to 70 megawatts.

“This expansion ensures that residents and enterprises experience fewer outages and enjoy a consistent electricity supply,” Mbushi said.

Electricity expert Fikiri Khalifa praised the project for its timely completion.

“We expected the plant to start operations at the end of the month, but it is ready ahead of schedule. This shows strong commitment to delivering national projects efficiently,” Khalifa said.

The Mtwara II power plant is part of broader government efforts to increase electricity access across Tanzania, particularly in historically underserved areas.

The reliable power supply is expected to support local businesses, attract investment, create jobs, and improve quality of life for communities in Mtwara and Lindi.

With this new facility, southern Tanzania moves closer to enjoying uninterrupted electricity, bringing tangible benefits to citizens and the regional economy.
