Geita schools urged to establish milk programs to boost student health

Geita District Commissioner,  Hashim Komba, has called on educational institutions in Geita Region to introduce a school milk program similar to existing school nutrition initiatives, with the aim of increasing milk consumption among students.

He made the remarks today, September 24, 2025, while addressing the closing ceremony of the National School Milk Day celebrations on behalf of Regional Commissioner Martine Shigela. 

Komba urged regional education officers to strategize on how best to implement the program, emphasizing that improved nutrition is key to strengthening students’ health.

The District Commissioner further encouraged parents and guardians to cultivate the habit of providing milk at home, helping children to adopt a lasting culture of milk consumption.

Representing the Tanzania Dairy Board, Ms. Deorinidei Mng’ong’o revealed that 240 litres of milk had been distributed to students with special needs in Geita, benefiting around 300 students from orphanages across the region.

The Tanzania Dairy Board, under the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, has so far reached 11 regions nationwide, introducing school milk programs in 218 schools and impacting over 120,000 students.

The National School Milk Day celebrations in Geita carried the theme: “For Good Results in School and Good Health, Milk is the Whole Plan.”
