Tanzania will proudly host the opening match of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on August 2, 2025, at the iconic Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, marking a significant milestone in the country’s sporting calendar.

This development was revealed today following a high-level planning meeting between Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, and members of the CHAN 2025 Organising Committee, led by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports and Government Spokesperson, Mr. Gerson Msigwa.

Held at the Regional Commissioner’s Office in Ilala Boma, the meeting focused on Tanzania’s readiness to host the continental tournament and position Dar es Salaam as a welcoming and efficient host city.

The leaders discussed critical aspects of infrastructure, logistics, safety, and hospitality, all aimed at ensuring a seamless experience for players, officials, and fans from across Africa.

Mr. Msigwa, who also chairs the national preparations, assured the Commissioner that progress is well on track, particularly with regard to the training venues, transport systems, and accommodation facilities, all in line with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.

“We are working around the clock to make sure every element meets international requirements. CHAN 2025 is not just about football  it’s about showcasing Tanzania’s capacity to host major international events,” said Mr. Msigwa.

In response, Chalamila reaffirmed the region’s full support and collaboration with the national organising team.

He emphasized the economic and social benefits the championship will bring, including increased tourism, job creation, and global exposure for local businesses.

“This is a golden opportunity for our country, and especially for Dar es Salaam. We are ready to deliver an unforgettable CHAN experience and turn this into a moment of national pride,” Chalamila said.

The African Nations Championship is a biennial football tournament organized by CAF, featuring national teams composed exclusively of players active in their home leagues.

Unlike the Africa Cup of Nations, CHAN is designed to spotlight domestic talent and promote the development of local football.

As the countdown begins, Tanzania’s preparations reflect its rising profile as a hub for international sports and cultural diplomacy.
