The Tanzania Boxing Federation (BFT) is in the final stages of securing membership with the World Boxing Association (WBA), a development that promises to elevate the profile of Tanzanian boxing on the international stage.
BFT Secretary-General, Makare Mashaga, confirmed that the federation has completed most of the necessary paperwork, including updating its constitution to align with WBA requirements.
The next critical step is to obtain official endorsements from the National Sports Council (BMT) and the Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC).
Speaking to The Respondent Online, Mashaga emphasized the importance of WBA membership, noting it is a prerequisite for Tanzanian boxers to compete in prominent global competitions such as the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games.
“To gain access to these prestigious events, affiliation with the World Boxing Association is mandatory. Without this membership, our boxers are barred from participation,” Mashaga explained.
He further outlined the current procedural status: “We are preparing to submit the required documents to BMT and TOC for their review. We anticipate forwarding the finalized application to the WBA by this Friday. We are hopeful for approval, as WBA is actively expanding its membership worldwide.”
Mashaga highlighted the urgency of the move, stressing that without joining the WBA, Tanzanian athletes risk missing out on key international competitions.
“The time to act is now. Failure to obtain WBA membership means we will only be spectators at major events like the Olympics and Commonwealth Games competitions overseen locally by TOC. For any boxer with ambition, participation in these arenas is essential,” he said.
Currently, BFT holds membership in the International Boxing Association (IBA), but seeks WBA affiliation to ensure Tanzanian boxers are well positioned globally, especially as many countries maintain dual memberships with both organizations.
This strategic step is expected to open new opportunities for Tanzanian boxing, enhancing athlete development and international exposure.
