Dar es Salaam— The Russian Embassy in Tanzania marked Russia National Day with a formal ceremony in Dar es Salaam, underscoring the enduring diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.

The event was attended by senior diplomats, government officials, and representatives from international organizations.

Russia National Day, celebrated annually on June 12, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Federation in 1990.

This historic milestone laid the groundwork for the emergence of modern Russia following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The day has evolved into a symbol of national pride, unity, and Russia's contemporary achievements.

In Dar es Salaam, the occasion was led by Russian Ambassador Andrey Avetisyan and featured participation from Tanzania’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation,  Denis Londo, who represented the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo.

Diplomatic relations between Tanzania and Russia trace back over six decades to 1961, shortly after Tanganyika’s independence.

Initially rooted in Cold War-era ideological partnerships, the relationship has since transitioned to focus on pragmatic cooperation encompassing trade, education, infrastructure development, and cultural exchange.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister Londo highlighted Russia’s significant contributions to Tanzania’s development in sectors such as education, health, and trade.

He noted the growing number of Tanzanian students benefiting from Russian scholarships, which has bolstered the country’s skilled workforce.

“Tanzania values its historic and strategic partnership with the Russian Federation, founded on mutual respect, sovereignty, and non-interference,” said Deputy Minister Londo.

He further encouraged Russian investors to deepen their engagement in Tanzania’s expanding economy, emphasizing the potential for enhanced economic diplomacy.

Ambassador Avetisyan reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to broadening bilateral cooperation, emphasizing plans to explore new areas of collaboration aligned with mutual interests.

The ceremony concluded with a reception at the ambassadorial residence, reflecting the optimism and forward-looking spirit that defines Russia-Tanzania relations today.

As both countries seek to strengthen economic, social, and cultural ties, the Russia National Day celebrations in Tanzania serve as a timely reminder of the historic bonds and promising future shared by these longtime partners.
