A transformative project to promote clean cooking energy in rural Lindi has been officially launched through a partnership between the Rural Energy Agency (REA) and Taifa Gas Limited.
This 317.3 million Tanzanian Shilling initiative aims to distribute 16,275 six-kilogram gas stoves (LPG) at a subsidized price of 19,500 Tanzanian Shillings, offering a 50% subsidy.
The project is set to benefit 16,275 households in rural areas of Lindi, marking a significant step toward achieving the government's clean cooking energy goals.
Engineer Emanuel Yesaya, the Acting Manager of Technical Support for Project Developers at REA, introduced the service provider during a ceremony held on January 3, 2025, at the Lindi Regional Commissioner’s Office.
He explained that the initiative is part of the government's broader strategy under the 2024-2034 National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy, which aims to ensure that 80% of Tanzanians use clean cooking energy.
"This project is not only about providing access to affordable clean cooking stoves but also about fostering a culture of sustainable energy use.
By reducing reliance on firewood, we can address deforestation, improve health outcomes, protect water sources, and safeguard the environment," said Engineer Yesaya.
Zuwena Jiri, the Regional Administrative Secretary of Lindi, expressed her gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for the initiative, recognizing its potential to significantly improve clean cooking energy adoption in rural communities.
She emphasized the importance of moving away from unsafe cooking fuels to protect both health and the environment.
"We are thrilled to receive this project and thank President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her leadership. We will continue to encourage our people to transition to safer, cleaner cooking methods," Jiri remarked.
Jiri also urged residents to keep their gas cylinders regularly refilled to ensure continuous access to clean cooking energy.
In addition, she called on Taifa Gas to set up agents in every village and ward to facilitate easy cylinder exchanges, ensuring that no one is left behind in the transition to clean energy.
Hawa Omari, the Sales Manager for Taifa Gas in Southern Tanzania, reassured the public that the company is fully prepared to reach all areas within the region.
added that they would provide essential training and guidance to consumers purchasing the subsidized gas stoves to ensure safe and effective use.
This project marks a pivotal move toward promoting cleaner and more sustainable cooking practices, and it is expected to have long-term benefits for both the environment and public health in Lindi.
