Minister Chana swears in new NCAA conservation commissioner, issues strong directives

The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ambassador Dr. Pindi Hazara Chana, has officially sworn in Dr. Elirehema Joshua Doriye as the new Conservation Commissioner of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA). 

The swearing-in ceremony took place today, December 23, 2024, at the NCAA Headquarters. During the event, Minister Chana urged Dr. Doriye to use his new position to deliver exceptional and impactful results that will benefit all Tanzanians.

“We have great confidence in your ability to continue harnessing your skills to achieve significant success in this authority, particularly at a time when the global tourism sector is thriving. 

In the short time you've been in this role, we have already seen impressive results that highlight your capability,” Minister Chana emphasized.

The Minister further directed Dr. Doriye to focus on expanding the tourism offerings within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. 

She called for plans to enhance key attractions, including the Olduvai Gorge, Amboni Caves, Mbozi Meteorite, Engaruka Ruins, and the Mumba Site, in order to attract more tourists to these rich cultural and historical sites.

In addition, Minister Chana stressed the importance of strengthening infrastructure to ensure the sustainability of tourism in the area. 

She urged the NCAA to improve tourism facilities, ensuring roads remain accessible year-round and that services for tourists meet the highest standards. 

She also called for enhanced collaboration between employees and external stakeholders to optimize overall performance.

In his speech, Dr. Elirehema Doriye expressed his gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for appointing him to the esteemed role of Conservation Commissioner. 

He assured those present that he would serve with dedication and responsibility.

“My goal is to oversee the sustainable conservation of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. I will ensure that both natural and historical resources are protected from degradation while also embracing technology to improve operations,” Dr. Doriye said.

He further committed to boosting strategic tourism by improving infrastructure, enhancing services, and raising the quality of attractions in the Ngorongoro region. 

Dr. Doriye also highlighted the importance of strengthening internal cooperation within the institution and the surrounding community to effectively design and implement the NCAA’s plans, while simultaneously improving employee welfare.

Dr. Hassan Abbasi, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, assured the audience that the Ministry would provide full support to ensure the successful implementation of the NCAA’s plans and objectives.

The event was attended by a range of dignitaries, including the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon. Dunstan Kitandula; the Representative of the Arusha Regional Commissioner; Deputy Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry; the Chairperson of the NCAA Board, General Venance Mabeyo (Retired); District Commissioners of Karatu and Ngorongoro; Chairpersons of CCM in Karatu and Ngorongoro; NCAA Board Directors; Management from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism; the Director of the Wildlife Coordination Unit; Heads of institutions under the Ministry; Directors of Local Government Authorities from Karatu and Ngorongoro; NCAA Management; and Officers and Rangers from the NCAA.
