The Local Tennis Governing Body (TTA)says it has plans to introduce the sport in many schools in the country so that the game is to grow and develop.
In a monitored Radio Interview ,TTA Vice president Rajabu Borry in an interview said although there are some schools with tennis as a physical education subject ,there is a need for the tennis subject to be taught at many schools country wide.
Borry said if this is implemented it will help the country to produce many players with basics and modern techniques of the game.
“Tennis is played in almost five regions in the country
and there are also some schools who teach it (Tennis)as a physical
education subject ,this is good development ,but we need more schools to teach
the sport and also the ga
me be played in all regions of the country, this is
the only sure way which will see the game developing in the country,” he said.
He could not disclose when the program will kickoff and the number of schools which will benefit from it ,saying it will be made public soon.
He was speaking at the end of the World Tennis /CAT Eastern African Junior Tennis Competition which the country hosted and attracted seven countries namely Kenya,Uganda ,Rwanda ,Burundi ,Seychelles, Comoro and the host Tanzania.
At the tournament which was used as qualifying for CAT Under 12 tournament which is slated for later this year in Morocco, Tanzania teams were in position 2 and one in boys and girls categories respectively.
He thanked the government through National sports Council (NSC) and Tennis stakeholders for making the tournament a success
TTA has had many initiatives aimed at developing the game of tennis from the grassroots levels, in the past TTA in conjunction with Arusha based Youth Development Program (YDP) and with support from Arusha Gymkhana Club launched the youth program .
Goodluck Mollel was the director of YDP which started in 2010 and was influential in identifying and training many young tennis players and some of them are in the national team .
At YDP Mollel was assisted by Jonas Jacob and Johnson Charles and some of the graduates of the program were Kanuti Alagwa, Ester Nankulange and Shana Mao who both represented the country at various levels .
Some of the Primary Schools where YDP took place are Naurei, Sanawari and Sekei both are based in Arusha .
