Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi has tasked Tanzania’s newly appointed envoy to Malaysia, Major General Mbaraka Mkeremy, with using his diplomatic assignment to deepen economic ties, attract investment and encourage Tanzanians living in Malaysia to invest back home.
Dr Nchimbi issued the directive on Thursday when he met Major General Mkeremy in Dodoma ahead of his posting to Malaysia.
He congratulated Major General Mkeremy on his appointment by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, noting that Malaysia is an important economic partner with strategic interests in Tanzania, particularly in trade and cooperation at international forums.
“Your role should go beyond traditional diplomacy. You need to identify opportunities that can strengthen relations between Tanzania and Malaysia and translate those relations into tangible economic benefits,” Dr Nchimbi said.
He urged the incoming envoy to actively engage Malaysian investors and promote Tanzania as an investment destination, while also mobilising the Tanzanian diaspora in Malaysia to consider investing in sectors with potential for growth at home.
The Vice President said effective economic diplomacy should help Tanzania expand markets, attract capital, promote business partnerships and create opportunities that ultimately benefit citizens.
Dr Nchimbi also directed Major General Mkeremy to familiarise himself with Tanzania’s National Development Vision 2050 and the CCM Election Manifesto 2025–2030 to ensure that the country’s diplomatic efforts are aligned with national development priorities.
He said understanding these priorities would enable the envoy to give greater attention to areas where Tanzania seeks stronger international cooperation, investment and economic opportunities.
For his part, Major General Mkeremy thanked President Samia for appointing him to represent Tanzania in Malaysia and expressed appreciation to Dr Nchimbi for his guidance.
He pledged to execute his responsibilities effectively and work to advance Tanzania’s interests during his diplomatic assignment.
The meeting highlights the government’s growing emphasis on economic diplomacy, with Tanzanian missions abroad expected to play a greater role in attracting investment, expanding trade opportunities and connecting the diaspora with development opportunities in the country.
