Zanzibar has taken a major step towards cleaner and more efficient public transport after President Hussein Ali Mwinyi launched electric bus services and the new Malindi Bus Terminal, with the project expected to improve mobility for thousands of residents.
The launch on July 23, 2026, marks the introduction of electric buses designed to provide a more reliable transport system while reducing carbon emissions and supporting the use of clean energy across the islands.
President Mwinyi directed the Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF) to fast-track the completion of modern bus terminals to ensure the public benefits fully from the new transport system.
He said the electric bus project is part of wider government efforts to invest in sustainable infrastructure and improve public services, noting that efficient transport is critical to economic activities and the daily lives of citizens.
“The success of this project will depend on having the necessary supporting infrastructure in place and ensuring that wananchi get the intended benefits,” President Mwinyi said.
The President said the government will continue implementing strategic development projects, including road networks, water projects, ports, airports, healthcare facilities and the Sports City, which is being prepared to support major sporting events, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He urged citizens to protect public infrastructure, saying the sustainability of development projects depends on responsible use and cooperation from the community.
The launch also introduced special travel cards for students, elderly citizens and other passengers, aimed at making public transport services more accessible and convenient for different groups.
The electric bus project is expected to reduce transport-related pollution, promote clean energy use and provide Zanzibar with a modern public transport system aligned with growing urban mobility needs.
