Kilimanjaro Region has recorded a promising start at the National Athletics Championships currently taking place at Filbert Bayi Secondary School grounds in Kibaha, after securing five medals on the opening day of competition.
The team’s coach, Amin Kimaro, said Kilimanjaro athletes have so far won one gold medal, two silver medals and two bronze medals, describing the performance as a strong beginning that reflects the quality of their preparations.
Kimaro said the region travelled with a squad of 18 athletes, including track runners and one field athlete, and expressed optimism that more medals could be added as the championships continue.
He noted that several athletes are yet to compete in key events, including the 400 metres and 1,500 metres finals, which he said present additional opportunities to improve the medal tally.
According to him, the early success has been made possible by consistent training programmes and strong coordination between athletes, coaches, and regional leadership.
He said the Regional Commissioner provided encouragement and blessings ahead of the competition, which helped motivate the team.
He also acknowledged support from sponsors, including Kilimanjaro Water, a tourism company, and Rombo Marathon organisers, saying their contribution has strengthened team morale and preparation.
Kimaro called for continued support from stakeholders in the development of athletics in the region, stressing that the results achieved so far demonstrate the importance of investing in sports as a pathway to talent development and national pride.
He added that the team remains focused and determined to improve its performance in the remaining days of the championships, with expectations of adding more medals before the competition concludes.
