ACT Wazalendo calls for accountability over security and abductions concerns

Opposition party ACT Wazalendo has raised concerns over what it describes as increasing incidents of insecurity in the country, including alleged cases of abductions and violence against civilians, calling on the government to strengthen accountability and transparency in addressing the matter.

In a statement released by the party, concerns were directed toward the office of the Prime Minister, Mwigulu Nchemba, urging stronger action in addressing reports of security-related incidents and ensuring public confidence in law enforcement institutions.

The party cited a recent incident said to have occurred on May 30, 2026, in Manyoni District, where a resident identified as Joyce Abel claimed that her 32-year-old son was allegedly taken from their home at night by individuals she described as first posing as traders before identifying themselves as security officers.

According to the account presented by the mother, the individuals allegedly handcuffed the young man and took him away without providing details of the reason for the arrest.

She further claimed that her subsequent attempts to locate him through visits to Manyoni Police Station were unsuccessful, as she was reportedly informed that he had not been brought there.

ACT Wazalendo stated that such incidents, if verified, raise serious concerns about due process, human rights protections, and the safety of citizens, and called for thorough investigations to establish the truth and ensure justice for affected families.

The party further said it remains concerned about what it describes as a pattern of unresolved cases involving missing persons and alleged excessive use of force, particularly in connection with events that followed the October 29, 2025 demonstrations.

It urged the government to provide clear updates and ensure that all allegations are independently investigated.

The opposition also expressed concern that recommendations from previous commissions of inquiry on issues of security and justice have not been fully implemented, arguing that this may be contributing to continued public anxiety.

Under Tanzania’s constitutional framework, the Prime Minister is responsible for coordinating government business and ensuring effective implementation of policies across ministries and state organs.

ACT Wazalendo argues that this role includes ensuring accountability within security institutions and responding to public concerns in a timely and transparent manner.

The government has in previous statements maintained that security agencies operate under the law and within established procedures, and that any allegations of misconduct are handled through appropriate legal and disciplinary mechanisms.

ACT Wazalendo has called for renewed commitment to the principles of justice, rule of law, and respect for human rights, urging authorities to prioritize investigations into all reported cases and provide updates to the public.

As of press time, the government had not issued a specific response to the latest statement.
