The Government of Tanzania has announced a major plan to expand and improve education infrastructure across the country through the construction of 1,360 classrooms, 17 dormitories, and 33 teachers’ houses in the 2026/2027 financial year.
The plan was presented in Dodoma on May 7, 2026, by the Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Adolf Mkenda, while tabling the ministry’s budget estimates in Parliament.
He said the investment is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to implement the 10-year compulsory education policy and ensure that every child has access to quality learning in a safe and supportive environment.
According to the minister, the construction of 1,360 classrooms will help address overcrowding in schools and improve teaching and learning conditions in both primary and secondary education.
The move is also expected to accommodate the increasing number of students enrolling in schools across the country.
In addition, the government plans to build 17 dormitories in selected secondary schools. The dormitories will mainly benefit students in remote and rural areas who travel long distances to access education, helping to improve attendance, safety, and academic performance.
The plan also includes the construction of 33 houses for teachers. This initiative is aimed at improving the living conditions of educators, particularly in hard-to-reach areas where housing remains a major challenge.
The government believes that better accommodation will motivate teachers and enhance their commitment to delivering quality education.
Furthermore, the ministry will establish 50 teacher resource centres in district councils. These centres are expected to provide professional support, training, and collaboration opportunities for teachers, with the goal of improving overall teaching standards in schools.
The government says these investments are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the education sector, improve infrastructure, and ensure equal access to quality education for all learners across the country.
