Former Inspector General of Police in Tanzania, Ernest Mangu, has called on Tanzanians to continue protecting peace and national unity, warning that any actions that threaten stability should be addressed early to avoid wider social and economic consequences.
Speaking in an interview published by Uhuru newspaper, Ernest Mangu said peace is one of the most important foundations of national development, stressing that no meaningful progress can be achieved without it.
He noted that Tanzania has long enjoyed relative stability, a situation that has helped the country attract investment, strengthen public services, and support growth across key sectors of the economy.
He said this achievement must be protected through responsibility and unity among citizens.
Mangu warned that any signs of incitement, including messages or actions that encourage violence or disrupt public order, should be condemned immediately.
He said delaying action against such behavior can lead to serious consequences that affect the economy and the wellbeing of citizens.
He added that experience from different parts of the world shows that when peace is disrupted, the effects spread quickly across all sectors, including business, education, and social life. Recovery from such situations often takes a long time and comes at a high cost.
According to him, maintaining peace requires discipline, respect for the law, and cooperation between citizens and institutions.
He urged Tanzanians to continue strengthening unity by rejecting divisive behavior and choosing peaceful ways of resolving differences.
Mangu also raised concern over the growing misuse of communication platforms, saying that irresponsible use of social media and other digital channels can spread misinformation and incite tension if not controlled.
He urged citizens to use communication platforms responsibly, noting that freedom of expression should be exercised with accountability and respect for others to avoid harming national harmony.
On security matters, he emphasized the importance of professional and fair law enforcement in maintaining order. He said the proper enforcement of laws is essential in protecting peace and ensuring justice for all citizens.
Mangu further called for strong cooperation between citizens and security institutions, saying trust and collaboration are key to preventing and addressing threats to stability.
He concluded by urging Tanzanians to treat peace as a shared national responsibility, saying it remains the foundation of development and must be protected for the benefit of current and future generations.
