Zanzibar to introduce electric bus transport by February 2026

By The Respondents Reporter

Zanzibar is set to begin public transport using electric buses by the end of February 2026, starting in the West Urban District of Unguja.

The initiative, led by the Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF), is designed to reduce traffic congestion, improve travel reliability, and provide an environmentally friendly transport option for residents.

The project will be implemented in partnership with GRT Limited, introducing modern bus terminals and an efficient operational system across main routes in the district.

Kijangwani Bus Terminal will act as the central hub connecting all routes, with additional stops at key points such as the Airport and Malindi Port.

The first electric buses are expected to start operating in early February, offering residents a new, reliable way to move around the island.

This project reflects the government’s commitment under President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, to bring meaningful development to Zanzibar through modern, sustainable solutions that directly benefit citizens’ daily lives.
