Minister Bashiru champions affordable loans for livestock farmers

By The Respondents Reporter

The government is moving to make loans more accessible to livestock farmers, ensuring they can expand and modernize their operations, Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Ambassador Dr. Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, has announced.

Speaking on January 9, 2026, during a meeting with residents of Ushetu District in Shinyanga Region, Dr. Bashiru said the initiative will create a system similar to the one that allows crop farmers to access financing through financial institutions.

“While crop farmers can easily access loans, livestock keepers rarely get the same opportunity. Without credit, it is very difficult to make significant progress. Our banks charge high interest rates, which discourages many from borrowing,” Dr. Bashiru said.

The minister assured that the government will ensure the loans for livestock farmers are affordable, with reasonable interest rates and flexible repayment options.

This support, he said, will empower farmers to adopt modern and efficient livestock farming practices.

During his visit, Dr. Bashiru also inspected key local facilities, including the Jambo milk processing plant, the Shinyanga Municipal Council slaughterhouse, and the Chibe livestock resting area, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving livestock production and supporting rural livelihoods.
